The Wombles were the creation of author Elizabeth Beresford, and following the publication of her books, then became a hugely successful animated TV series in the 1970s, narrated by Bernard Cribbins. Ahead of their time, the Wombles – fictional furry creatures who lived on Wimbledon Common – had a motto: “Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish” – and dedicated much of their time to recycling and repurposing items they found.

The Wombles Community Charity, which the Council are proud to be associated with, is encouraging everyone to do more for their local environment, from recycling to collecting litter, and reusing/refurbishing old items rather than sending them to landfill.
